This Year's Model Updates:

More power for the 4.7-liter V8 and three new trim levels (SE, Sport and Overland) are on tap for this year. Also, several important safety and convenience options such as side curtain airbags, power-adjustable pedals, a tire-pressure monitoring system and automatic windshield wipers debut this year.

Pros:
  • Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.
Cons:
  • Noisy and unrefined, questionable reliability.

  • Dont be fooled - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Funny: My 3rd GC. Overland Model. Well maintained @ 60k, the climate control quit working, both seat warmers quit, Ready for 3rd brake job. Cost new $37K. Now needs over $2K work just to make it worth $8k according to KBB. Foolishly thought about trading it in on a new GC. The first thing the tech inspected was climate control, 2nd seat warmers. Internet cites say this is very common. Service department gives me encouragement that if they fix the climate control, theyll put in stronger air flaps than original. This is just plain wrong. I cannot bring myself to buy another Jeep. Had he admitted Jeeps poor design and repaired accordingly, I would of bought a new GC but got murano le.

  • The Original Upscale SUV - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Im somewhat of a newcomer into the world of Jeep. However, after test driving the Grand Cherokee Laredo, my idea of Jeep changed drastically. For a mid-size SUV, it rides surprisingly smooth. Acceleration is decent with the 4.0L 6 and the interior features are convenient. While its still extremely new, I can say this vehicle is solid in terms of assembly. Let it snow and where are the trails?

  • Be prepared to be re-repaired - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Jeep has the best TV commercials. Driving through the mud, under the lake, buried in snow, we all notice the applications. Owning 11 of the Grand varieties, and 3 Wrangler/CJ models. my first review. As far as the advertisements. I cant even drive my Overland on a rainy day, without the rotors warping, replaced at 16k, 36k, 47k, and needed again at 66k miles. To date, climate control problems ($900), starter replaced,3 batteries, multiple visits for unclogging A/C drainage onto passenger floor, drivers heated seat , CD changer not working, power side mirrors need exorcist. I have spent a considerable amount of time enjoying the benefits of performance in snow, ice, pulling the boat.

I CHOSE THIS VEHICLES PRIMARILY ON ITS GOOD LOOK AND SIMPLE DRIVETRAIN. ON ROAD DYNAMICS SUFFERED IMENSELY WITH SIMPLE DRIVETRAIN AND SUSPENSION. OIL CHANGE HAS BEEN THE ONLY MAINTENANCE WITH OVER 46K+ MILES AND COUNTING...OH YES THERE WAS A SENSOR REPLACEMENT UNDER WARRANTY,AND DRIVER SIDE MIRROR REPLACEMENT ON THE NORTH SIDE OF WARRANTY, THANKS TO "CSI" CONCERNED REPAIRED COMPLIMENTARY...OTHERWISE LOVE MY TRUCK.

  • Somewhat Disappointing - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

We have found this vehicle to be somewhat less than what we expected from Jeep. We have four main complaints. 1. It does not get anywhere close to the promised gas mileage. 2. It down shifts very hard when on the interstate. 3. The comfort of the seats is not good for long trips. 4. In the first 30,000 miles we had to replace brake rotors & pads, and had to replace fuel injectors, very little of which was covered under warranty. I would not buy another Jeep SUV.

  • Jeep can be better - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I have had mine for just over two years, I had a couple of issues the worst is the steering system & suspension. My previous Jeep had the same problem with the Steering and Suspension issues these cars are not meant to be abused too much. I think Chrysler needs to improve this if it wants to stay with the competition. Toyota finally learned its lesson after a few years of screwing up on the 4 Runner, that the 2004 4 runner is actually better then the Grand Cherokee Laredo. Yes its a little more expensive but its worth it. If Chrysler cannot improve the quality of this model, especial when the new version comes out in 2005, then my next SUV will be a Toyota 4 Runner.

  • Wheres the A/C? - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This is our second Jeep Grand Cherokee. The first was really great and relatively trouble free. This one has been in the shop 7 times for the air conditioner. At first, it did not work at all. After 7 tries, it works, sort of. I live in a hot area and you have to run it on high all of the time. The dealer originally said the air from the vents should be at 38 degrees. They have now changed their minds and say that 44 to 50 is acceptable. The dealer says this is as good as it gets now. If you live in a hot place, dont buy a 2002 JGC. Otherwise it is a fine car.

  • My comparison of Laredo -vs- Durango - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Am testing driving a Laredo this week in anticipation of trading my 99 Durango SLT - both are 2WD models. Laredo has far less blind spots, smoother handling (less truck feel),shorter turn ratio (nice), V6 engine peppier than the large V8- averaging 4 miles more a gallon (18.3) than the Durango, seats material and fabric is more comfortable. Have added 6 features on this model vs 3 take- aways from Durango (3rd bench seat, fold-down rear armrest and some cup holders).

  • 2002 Special Edition - Love my Grand! - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I owned 2 Explorers before I finally crossed my fingers on the reliability issue got a Jeep. Its a superior vehicle all around: better ride, very comfortable seating, awesome power and acceleration from the 4.7, more tow capability, REAL off- roading ability. Averaging lifetime 17mpg (4.7 w/4wd), only 1 mpg less than my 99 V-6 2wd Explorer. Fewer quality/warranty issues than I expected. Best, most versatile vehicle Ive ever owned.

  • Could be better - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I bought my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD in 2007, used with 70k miles on it. I thought I got a deal of a lifetime on the price. Ive only had this vehicle for about 8 months. So far, things that have been wrong with it include: Car lost power and wouldnt start back up for about and hour, then it would die again (had to get that fixed $300), brakes are making a grinding noise even though I am told the brake pads are fine, in reverse it makes a weird clunking and vibrating sound, the mechanics say nothing is wrong. The engine light has been on for a month. Feels squirrely on the highway. I cant afford to keep getting things fixed! I also own a 2000 Honda Civic, never have any problems!
